The 1st arrondissement is one of the most central in Paris, and offers a large number of tourist and cultural attractions. Place Vendôme, one of the most famous and luxurious squares in the world, is today renowned for its large number of jewelers. Frédéric Boucheron was the first to set up business there, and was followed by numerous other jewelers, watchmakers and craftsmen, including Cartier, Chaumet and Rolex. The luxurious Ritz Paris hotel overlooks the square, and was recently fully renovated to earn the official title of “palace”. The Palais-Royal comprises the palace itself, its gardens, its galleries and its theaters. All are delimited by rue Saint-Honoré and place Colette, rue de Richelieu, rue de Montpensier, rue de Beaujolais and rue de Valois. Rue Saint-Honoré is situated near the Tuileries Garden and the Saint-Honoré market. It’s an excellent address for not only shopping but also luxury hotels like the Costes and the Mandarin Oriental. You’ll also find the very popular luxury concept store Colette. It’s in Paris’ 2nd arrondissement that you’ll find many of the capital’s important architectural landmarks, including place des Victoires (in the center of which stands the imposing equestrian statue of Louis XIV), the Palais Brongniart (which once housed the Paris stock exchange), and the Tour Jean-sans-Peur in rue Etienne Marcel. There are a number of well-known passages boasting all sorts of stores, hotels, cafés and museums. The longest is Passage Choiseul, which is listed a historic monument. Although largely occupied by stores, it is also residential. Galerie Vivienne houses mostly stores selling ready-to-wear collections and decorative items. The Montorgueil district borders the 1st and 2nd arrondissements. It has lots of pedestrian streets and is delimited by Les Halles, rue du Louvre, rue Réaumur and boulevard de Sébastopol. Le Marais is a historic Parisian district spreading across parts of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements. It boasts numerous museums and historic sites and is today protected by a national conservation plan. Place des Vosges, formerly place Royale de Paris, is the oldest square in Paris. It’s structured around two pavilions, that of the Queen to the north and that of the King to the south. It’s famous for being the home of several well-known figures from the worlds of politics, art and the media. Today it also houses numerous art galleries. From here, you can access the gardens of the Hotel de Sully, which is the seat of the Centre des monuments nationaux and has an excellent library dedicated to the history of Paris. Ile Saint-Louis is one of the two natural islands still found in the Seine river. People living on Ile Saint-Louis are called Ludovisiens or Ludoviciens. It’s named after King Louis IX, commonly known as Saint Louis. Ile Saint-Louis has a number of mansions bordering the Seine, and since the beginning of the 1980s has become a choice spot for second homes and pieds-à-terre. The island is also known for its glacier, Berthillon, thought to make the best sorbets in Paris. Of interest: Archives nationales; Carnavalet Museum; place des Vosges; Musée Picasso; Carreau du Temple; Marché des Enfants-Rouges; and the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers (CNAM).

The 9th arrondissement of Paris is known for its numerous theaters, including the Opéra Garnier, a true jewel of 19th century architecture, and its cinemas located in the heart of the Grands Boulevards. In the trendy districts of Pigalle and Abbesses, you will find the rue des Martyrs. Very animated, it was formerly an old way leading to the village of Montmartre, the highest point of the capital and a famous Parisian tourist spot. This highest point offers a view of Paris, including the Eiffel Tower. In the Pigalle and Abbesses districts, you will discover an abundance of cabarets, bars shops and gourmet restaurants. Finally, you will admire museums such as the the Grévin museum or the Gustave Moreau museum and you can enjoy a shopping session in the in the Galeries Lafayette and Printemps stores. Place de la République surrounds a statue representing the Republic, at the base of which are a series of bas-reliefs depicting historical events. It marks the border between three arrondissements (2nd arrondissement, 3rd arrondissement, and 10th arrondissement of Paris). The Canal Saint-Martin is a 4.55 km canal stretching from the Bassin de la Villette to the Bassin de l’Arsenal, which communicates with the Seine. The Canal Saint-Martin is used mainly for transporting cruise passengers and some merchandise. Parisians like to walk along and even picnic on its banks. They’re closed to traffic on Sundays as part of the city’s “Paris respire” initiative, as a result of which it’s become a favorite spot for walkers and cyclists.

The 16th arrondissement of Paris is essentially residential. You’ll find a large number of embassies and consulates as well as famous sports facilities such as the Parc des Princes and Stade Roland Garros. The Trocadéro is also home to the Palais de Chaillot, created for the 1937 world fair, with its square and gardens, as well as the famous Fountain of Warsaw which has 20 water cannons and the aquarium created in 1867. The square is lined with numerous restaurants and cafés, including the famous Carrette pâtisserie. Avenue Foch, home to many grand buildings and mansions, is one of the twelve avenues leading away from place de l’Etoile and one of the most prestigious streets in Paris. Its wide avenues were once used by horsemen to reach the Bois de Boulogne. Of interest: Eiffel Tower; Maison de la Radio; place du Trocadéro; avenue Victor Hugo; Palais de Chaillot; and Palais de Tokyo.

The La Muette district stretches from the Bois de Boulogne and Passy on the one side to rue Ranelagh and avenue Henri-Martin on the other. Ranelagh Gardens are English in style and were created by engineer Jean-Charles Alphand. There is a very famous puppet theater and they’re bordered to the west by the Musée Marmottan Monet. Rue Passy is one of the busiest shopping streets in the 16th arrondissement. You’ll find the Passy Plaza shopping mall and the large Franck & Fils store, among others. Villa Montmorency is a gated district in the 16th arrondissement home to 120 houses built on a small hill. The general architectural style is reminiscent of the seaside villas found in Deauville and Arcachon. The 17th arrondissement stretches over a large area from east to west. It’s made up of several districts including Ternes, Plaine Monceau, Batignolles and Epinettes. Parc Monceau is one of the capital’s most beautiful gardens. It’s accessed through large wrought-iron gates decorated with gold and bearing Davioud’s hallmark. The Batignolles district is in full expansion, thanks largely to the Clichy-Batignolles urban development plan which includes the creation of a 10-hectare park surrounded by new property development projects and accommodating the capital’s future Palais de Justice. Of interest: Poncelet market; Batignolles market; Musée Cernuschi; Parc Monceau; and Musée Nissim de Camondo.

Located in the north of Paris, the 18th arrondissement is one of the most typical arrondissements of the city! A must-see district, it includes the old village of Montmartre. Located on a hill, the Montmartre district, with its cobbled streets, its pretty houses and its small green spaces, constitutes a place its small green spaces, constitutes a place headlight of the capital.
